    A revolution indeed, kicking the bucket against uncomfortable and aesthetically lacking products, or at the other end of the spectrum, stylish wear with no benefits beyond good looks. our mantra, 'no compromise between performance & aesthetics'.

    We'd like to share the beauty which is milk fiber, one of the major components of the Lanati milk yarn.

     

     

     

    Our Eco-Friendly Lanati Milk Yarn

    Atom compression socks knitted with milk fiber have unique properties, which are naturally derived without addition of chemicals or materials which may affect sensitive skin.

    the milk fiber makes the socks:

    1. Soft, and very easy to put on, compare with standard synthetic or cotton compression socks and you will notice a huge difference in the ease of wear and comfort factor.
    2. Lanati Milk fiber is naturally antimicrobial, so keeps your socks fresh and your feet don't smell.
    3. It is also a very cooling fiber, great during pregnancy, in hot weather, for people whose feet are naturally hot. To aid warmth for those that need their feet to be toastier, and for padding, we recommend a terry lined trainer liner on top of the Atom socks. We are in process of developing a world first terry lined milk sock in full graduated compression, so watch this space.
    4. The fibers are moisture wicking, again keeping feet dry by carrying sweat away.
    5. Lanati milk fiber has uv protection properties.
    6. It is moisturizing, so will not dry your skin out, or give that itchy scratchy feel.

     

     

     

    The history of Lanati milk fiber


    Milk fiber first came about in the 1930s when the Ford Motor Company was researching and developing alternatives for their upholstery fabrics due to the high costs and scarcity of traditional fibers in the three decades under the shadow of the World Wars.

    Its use died out not much after the Second World War, due to it being a very difficult fiber to work, and also quite expensive when compared to existing mainstream fibers when not affected by difficult economic climates. Today milk fiber is more expensive than silk.

     

     

    Advances in extrusion process mean today the fiber is organic and Eco-friendly, whereas in the 30s harsh chemicals were needed. Recent technological advances in knitting and woven processes have made our offering viable, and whilst still remaining one of the most expensive fibers our company uses, its uses and benefits are an exciting prospect in the clothing industry.

     

     

    So how do we make socks from the milk we drink?


    Milk Yarn is made from milk protein fibers. Firstly, the milk is de-watered, that is all the water content is taken out, and then it is skimmed. Latest bio-engineering techniques are then used to make a protein spinning fluid, and efficiencies and technology have resulted in very little water being used and very little waste products.  This fluid is suitable for the wet spinning process through which the final high-grade textile fiber is made.
     
    Milk protein fiber is a fiber that has beneficial properties. It contains eighteen amino-acids beneficial to human health. It can be spun alone or with cashmere, silk, spun silk, cotton, wool, ramie and other fibers to make fabrics. The fabrics made of these fibers nourish the skin, and are anti-microbial.
     
     
    Some of the many properties that will make it one of the sought-after fabrics of the future.

    1.  The natural protein humectant factor is present in the milk fiber, this has the effect of making the skin more delicate and smooth. As such fabrics made of milk yarns are suitable for household textiles and garments. It is glossy and luxurious in appearance, feel and comfort-ability, just like silk or cashmere. The particularly smooth surface of the fiber is ideal for people with sensitive skin

    2. The milk fiber is antibacterial - naturally! We are using no antibacterial finish

    3. It has many beneficial chemical properties such as moderated fiber breaking tenacity and modulus, etc.

    4. Tests have shown the fiber has natural UV protection.

    5. It is hygroscopic in nature; as such it absorbs moisture very well.

    6. The fiber absorbs dye very easily and colors evenly, resulting in vibrant products. The dyeing can be done during the manufacturing process and without additional chemicals and is color fast.

    7. It can be blended well with other fibers such as silk, cashmere, cotton and bamboo.

    8. Whilst we recommend to maintain a strict pressure of between 18-22 mmHg you should replace your socks with regular use, as socks go, these are very long lasting. we have people wearing them for years and they still look good today.

    9. When you do need to get rid of them, the milk fiber is fully compostable and thus provides in its entire life cycle a positive contribution to the environment. 

    The fiber was granted the International Ecological Textile Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Authentication in April 2004.

    We innovated with the milk fiber for our compression socks, and now we are gradually adding ladies shapewear and men's compression wear items to the range, as well as our cutting edge baby wear which grows with your baby - one size fits 6months to 3 years, as the special knit technique has inbuilt stretchability, but with a 'memory' which means it always gently moulds the body without any discomfort.And of course being natural, and sensitive to young skin, its ideal for the first years of babies and toddlers.
